BEIJING — When the occasion calls for levity, USA Gymnastics men’s Olympic coach Kevin Mazeika of Houston can trade iPod playlists and engage in hacky sack contests with athletes half his age.

And when it comes time to perform, Mazeika-coached teams have a knack for success on the world stage. He was on hand when U.S. teams won silver medals at the 2001 and 2003 world
championships, and Tuesday he was on the floor as the 2008 men’s Olympic team won a bronze medal.

Granted, the U.S. men were one slot lower on the medals stand than in Athens, but Mazeika said the adversity faced by this year’s team, which lost Paul and Morgan Hamm to injuries but got stellar performances from alternates Raj Bhavsar and Sasha Artemev, made for a uniquely satisfying conclusion.

“We had a consistent run in the four years leading up to 2004, and winning the silver medal was an incredible accomplishment,” he said. “This time, given the whole roller-coaster ride we’ve had, it’s
just unbelievable that this team stuck together.

“We never gave up. We always believed.” . . . more.
